The Man Who Inspired Jamin Coffee

At the root of Jamin Coffee is not just a bean—it’s a man.

John Jamin Musundi was more than a farmer. He was a revolutionary, a visionary, and a quiet powerhouse in Africa’s cooperative movement. Born with his hands in the soil and his heart in his community, he believed that land and labor should go hand in hand—and that dignity belongs to every grower, not just those at the top.

As one of the first Black Kenyans to grow coffee after colonial restrictions were lifted, JJ Musundi helped change the course of Kenya’s agricultural economy. Through his work with the Kenya Planters Cooperative Union and as a founding member of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, he advocated for structures that gave smallholder farmers power, ownership, and financial access. He didn't just believe in systems—he built them. Quietly, firmly, with deep integrity.

He believed that a coffee cherry was more than just fruit—it was a future. One that belonged to the people who nurtured it.

Growing up on our family farm, I watched him wake before the sun, pruning his coffee trees with care and joy. He would hum quietly, pick up a fallen branch, and say things like, “Even trees speak, if you’re listening.” I was always listening.

And now, decades later, I’ve come back to the soil.

Jamin Coffee was born from that lineage of love and land. Named after my father, it honors not only his name but his mission. Today, we source and roast specialty beans from East Africa—Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania—and bring them to a global audience with one core goal: to empower those who make the magic happen.

Specifically, the women.

Traditionally, women have always done the labor in coffee—planting, picking, sorting—but rarely held the deeds, the titles, or the profits. That’s changing. Slowly. And we’re here for it. The long-term vision of Jamin Coffee is to build a collective of women growers, landowners, and employers who can shape their own futures just as my father shaped his, and paved the way for others.

Because we believe coffee isn’t just something you drink.
It’s something you build from.
A tool. A vehicle. A movement.

When you buy a bag of Jamin Coffee, you’re not just getting fresh, ethically grown, micro-lot beans roasted with care.
You’re tasting a legacy.
You’re supporting a new generation of women rewriting the rules of ownership.
You’re sipping the story of a man who believed in the power of soil, systems, and community.

Thank you for being here.
